Have You Heard of TMD?
TMD, or TMJ, is a jaw dysfunction that can cause jaw pain and discomfort. It involves the temporomandibular joint in the jaw. This joint acts like a sliding hinge and connects your jawbone to your skull. Pain, difficulty chewing or a clicking or locking jaw are some of the symptoms of TMD.
The medical term for TMD is Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction and has been linked to be a common cause of migraines and sleep apnea in many patients. Jaw dislocation and popping can also be experienced by those with TMD.
How Do You Know If You Have TMD?
It takes more than a self diagnosis to know for sure. We suggest visiting a TMD dental clinic for expert care.
We place a strong emphasis on the accurate diagnoses and effective treatment of TMD Dysfunction at McCloy Dental. With increased awareness and a patient-centric approach, our tailored treatment and diagnosis of this disorder has helped many of our patients resolve and eliminate TMD.
What Are Some Common Causes of TMD?
As already mentioned, visiting a TMD dental clinic is encouraged to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
TMD is more common in women and most people don’t know they have it. Anxiety and stress can result in clenched jaws and tight shoulders and is often found to be the contributing factor in a patient experiencing TMD. This tension compromises the jaw points and stretches and aggravates the ligaments causing pain and / or discomfort.
At McCloy Dental, we aspire to help patients resolve and eliminate this disorder, including the often distracting and uncomfortable symptoms that go with it.
