for the fun! Yes, fun! At the dentist!
It’s a whole new world!
In support of ‘World’s Greatest Shave’, clinic co-owner Russell McCloy and admin all-star Sandra will be baring all (of their heads!) and shaving their noggins in front of you, our bemused audience. Marvellous Meagan, also from our admin team, will be joining the folly by dying her hair an extremely conspicuous colour of the rainbow! An added bonus for those who love a giggle is the opportunity to win the auction to be the person who decides what crazy hair design Russell gets stuck with! Zig-zags and a mini mohawk anyone?!
But as much as there will be fun and lots of laughs on the day, the reason behind the ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ is a sobering one that has caused many tears. The Shave is run by The Leukaemia Foundation to raise much needed funds to help ease the practical and emotional burden of those affected by blood cancer and to advance medical research into prevention and cures. 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of The Shave and it remains one of the biggest fundraising events in Australia.
Like most of us, the team at McCloy Dental all have some level of personal experience with the ragged journey that is cancer and know it doesn’t just affect an individual, but a whole family, a whole community. While this particular fundraising effort was inspired by Sandra’s personal experience with blood cancer, Russell lost his mother early in 2017 to bowel cancer, so the cancer cause was a relevant one for him too. Meagan, the trooper she is, is in it to show her support and solidarity with this important cause.
Sailing past the initial fundraising goal of $800 with over a month to spare, the team raised $1,012 at their water slide fundraiser on the weekend, to bring their total collected to $2,888 at the time of publication.
With two significant events still to take place (see details further below), they have now set their sights on the more lofty target of $4,000.
The funds raised have real family impact. For example, just $560 is enough to give a regional family a fully paid place to stay close to treatment in the city for one week. That’s a major cost and practical consideration taken care of, and it makes all the difference. Check out this link to discover some more of the awesome ways your dollars are directly improving the lives of the individuals and families affected by leukemia and other blood cancers.
McCloy Dental co-owner Karen McCloy, (and the one who has to face Russell’s ridiculous hairstyle every morning) says for them ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ is just one of the ways the business finds to give back to the community. ‘We try to help different causes. In the past we have helped Cystic Fibrosis Qld, Tour De Cure, Hummingbird House, Variety Special Children’s Christmas Party and The Fred Hollows Foundation.’
If you want to be part of the community frivolity at McCloy Dental while supporting a really worthwhile cause, here’s what you need to know:
This “Time Catcher” pallet board (measuring 108 cm x 72.5 cm), designed and kindly donated by artist Sarah Watts from SWAT Designs, is up for silent auction on the 16th of March. If you would like to see and place a bid on this gorgeous piece it is on display at McCloy Dental from now through until auction day.
Remember every cent counts, and all proceeds collected are going to ‘World’s Greatest Shave’.
When: Friday, 16th of March at 2pm
Where: McCloy Dental, 95a Morayfield Road Caboolture, Qld, 4510
What: Come donate and cheer as Russell and Sandra have their heads shaved, Meagan has hers dyed a zany colour, and the “Time Catcher” design gets a lucky new owner.
How to donate: Directly at the clinic, by following this link, or on the day!
BONUS: Every donation on the day will receive a free delicious cupcake courtesy of “Kerrie’s Cupcakery” so get in quick before they all go! (Kerrie is a former McCloy Dental employee and yes, we think it’s funny she’s gone into sweets!)
The McCloy Dental team look forward to seeing you on Friday the 16th of March! All welcome! For more details on this event contact the clinic on 5495 7988.
P.S. Didn’t get the ‘cats in hats’ reference in the opening line? When asked what they hoped would be done with their hair after the big chop, Russell said his could be made into a grey wig that nobody would want, and Sandra was very amused to think that maybe hers could be made into a red hat for her cat! Waste not, want not!
